2021-22 School Year: What were the backgrounds of Newton County School District students?

White students made up 69.4% of the 1,703 students enrolled in Newton County School District schools during the 2021-22 school year, making them the most represented ethnicity, according to the Mississippi Department of Education.

This is a 6.5% increase over the previous school year.

Newton County Elementary School had the highest enrollment in the district with 889 students.

A snapshot of Newton County School District schools showed 69.4% of students were white, 21.6% were Black, 4.3% were American Indian, 2.6% were Hispanic, and 0.9% Asian.

Newton County School District roughly covers two schools within Newton County and has a main office in Decatur.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly a decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
