East Central Community College Hosts Secondary Skills USA Contest

East Central Community College in Decatur was proud to host 417 students from over 20 high schools on campus on Friday afternoon for the Region 3 – Secondary SkillsUSA Contest.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. A nonprofit national education association, SkillsUSA serves middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

High school students that came to ECCC competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, Job Interview, Job Interview Receptionist, Welding, Welding Fabrication, Masonry, Carpentry, Automotive, Job Demonstration A & Open, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Prepared Speech, Related Technical Math, and SkillsUSA Quiz Bowl competitions.

“We are very excited to provide a hosting site for these SkillsUSA competitions each year, as this is a great opportunity for these students to showcase their skills to businesses and partners in the area,” said ECCC’s Director of Career and Technical Education Cody Spence. “This event provides East Central an opportunity to show these students, from our local district and beyond, that we value the SkillsUSA organization and what it stands for and hope that they may choose to continue their education here and be a part of our very strong SkillsUSA chapter to compete at the collegiate level.”
