Of the 10,620 students enrolled in Lauderdale County schools in 2020-2021, 59.1% were Black or African American, according to the Mississippi Department of Education. This was the most represented ethnicity among Lauderdale County students.

This is a 1.7% increase over the previous school year.

Meridian High School had the highest enrollment of Black or African American students in the 2020-2021 school year.

A snapshot of Lauderdale County schools showed 59.1% students were Black or African American, 35.4% were White, 2.2% were Hispanic or Latino, 1% were Two or More Races and 0.3% were Asian.

There are 21 schools in Lauderdale County.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly one decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
