Newton County Extension Office - A Case of Mistaken Identity!

We get a lot of calls regarding “lady bugs” invading homes this time of year.

It’s a case of mistaken identity!!

The Asian Lady beetle was brought here to the US to control aphids.

BIG MISTAKE! The native “lady bug” is actually a cousin and is in fact being destroyed by the non native Asian Lady beetle.

The Asian version is larger and more aggressive than the native cousin.

You can identify the invader by the “m” shaped spot behind their head.

They also exude a foul smelling liquid when they feel threatened.

May be an image of outdoors and text that says 'ASIAN LADY BEETLE "M" shaped spot Aggressive Invades homes Smelly LADYBUG No "M" shaped spot Harmless Eats garden pests Lives outdoors Good for the environment'
